  1. “You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintery light. But you knew there would always be the spring, as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person died for no reason.”
    ― Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast

    Fall leaves fall

    Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away;
    Lengthen night and shorten day;
    Every leaf speaks bliss to me
    Fluttering from the autumn tree.

    I shall smile when wreaths of snow
    Blossom where the rose should grow;
    I shall sing when night's decay
    Ushers in a drearier day.--------

    Louisiana Autumns are not beautiful at all. But the relief from the heat is welcomed, and signals Fall.
    Hey, I just made a rhyme!

    1. You could have even written, "But the re-leaf from heat is welcomed..." You would have been a punster and a poet! Ha! Thank-you for the beautiful autumnal snapshot, even if Louisiana only "signals".

      Love you!

    1. I remember having high temps up to Thanksgiving in SoCal. We had a Liquid Amber tree in my folk's front yard. It was one of the only trees in the neighborhood to have fall colors. Mostly, trees did not lose their leaves or they just turned brown. I do enjoy having fall here and the corn fields definitely help.

      Thanks for the Anne of Green Gables quote. I feel the same way.

      May fall come quickly!

      Smiles, KJ

  5. Neighbors in October
    BY DAVID BAKER
    All afternoon his tractor pulls a flat wagon
    with bales to the barn, then back to the waiting
    chopped field. It trails a feather of smoke.
    Down the block we bend with the season:
    shoes to polish for a big game,
    storm windows to batten or patch.
    And how like a field is the whole sky now
    that the maples have shed their leaves, too.
    It makes us believers—stationed in groups,
    leaning on rakes, looking into space. We rub blisters
    over billows of leaf smoke. Or stand alone,
    bagging gold for the cold days to come.
